The life and death of Arun Gupta

Summary:An interesting insight into rebirth and attachment. The story details about a dedicated pious man Arun Gupta, and his afterlife.

This is an incident of an educational institution.  A lot of employees were working in that Institute.  In that Institute there was a man named Arun Gupta.  He was ardently revered in the whole of the Institution.  He was working since the inception of that Institute.  In the initial days of the Institute, it was in a makeshift condition.  At that time only ten employees used to work in toto.  Arun Gupta joined the institute at the age of 19 years.  He joined the Institute as a Clerk.  In the beginning, the Institute was in Asbestos sheets.  Only four rooms were there to cater to the 10 employees.

Arun Gupta was given all odd jobs to do.  He used to like the Institute as his alma mater.  He has made a small puja space in the room where he used to sit.  Every day on reaching the office his first duty was to worship in his puja space.  He was a very pious man.  In the meantime, his institute submitted a project report to the Ministry of Human Resource Development for the construction of an office building.  The MHRD studied the whole project report thoroughly and approved their project.  The Ministry allotted land in an institutional area and made an allocation of funds for constructing a building on that institutional area.  It took about three years to complete the whole building. Mr. Arun Gupta supervised the whole project as well as worked in his makeshift office.  Mr. Arun Gupta supervised the whole project in such a way as if he was building his own house.  During the construction of the building of the Institute, he took a house on rent nearby that building.  He took the house nearby so that he could supervise the construction at night also.

During the construction process, he studied books on constructing a building.  He was having a friend who was a civil engineer.  Arun took some of his books to study the construction work.  After studying the books thoroughly he used to instruct the laborers if there was any fault in the construction process.  He learned the construction work so well that the laborers and the contractor of the building thought that he was a structural engineer.  His office colleagues used to say that he farmed (cultivated) the building with his own blood.   After three years the building was completely constructed.  The government has allotted the Institution a huge area.  As they were having a lot of space in the whole complex, they constructed one residential complex also for the employees.  Mr. Arun Gupta was also allotted one flat in that complex.

Mr. Arun Gupta never got married.  He was so devoted to the building and office work that he never found time for his marriage.  With hard work and dedication, he became Director of that Institute.  It took him about 20 years to become the Director of that Institute.  Though he became Director, he still supervised the whole building twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.  Suppose if he found any dirt in the building area, he would immediately call the cleaner to clear that dirt.  With the passage of time, the total strength of the Institute became around 200.  The employees of the Institute teased him by saying that there was no need for his marriage, as he was already married to the Institute.  Due to his dedication and devotion towards the office and building his colleagues teased him that the building was his wife. In this process one day his superannuation day came and he got his retirement. On his retirement day, he got a lot of gifts and a lot of love from his colleagues. After retirement, he was not having any place to live and he was not having any family.  The Institute’s Management decided to keep him as a Consultant.  The Management decided that till he would work as Consultant he could retain the flat which he was allotted.   During his tenure as a Consultant, they fixed a lump sum salary for him. Though the salary was not much still he could manage.  In that salary, he could eke out his day-to-day activities.  Though he had become an old man still every day after the office hours he supervised the whole complex.  At the age of 65 years, he suffered a heart attack during office hours.  Some of his colleagues took him to a nearby hospital.  The Doctors told the office people that his condition was not very good.  After a week he died in the hospital.  As he was not having any relatives to do his cremation, his office colleagues did his cremation.

On Mr. Arun Gupta’s death, the whole office felt sad as he was a very dedicated man.  He was really a good man.  Day after his death the whole office solemnized his death in grief.  The whole office observed 2 minutes of silence for him.  As Mr. Arun Gupta was so much dedicated to the Institute the Management decided to erect a monument in his name.  Even after his death, he was revered like a saint.  On his death anniversary, the whole office used to gather in front of his monument and do prayer in his name.

With passage of time one bitch started to stay nearby staff quarters.  Most of the staff who used to stay there started to give food to that bitch.  Sometimes the bitch was followed by male dogs.  After sometime she became pregnant.  The bitch gave birth to six puppies.  Puppies were so beautiful that people took them to their homes.  Only one male puppy remained in the complex.  The male puppy used to roam with his mom.  In the process the dog became an adult.  One day the bitch also left.  Now only the male dog remained.  The dog was a very good one.  He never used to bite any one.  Everybody used to like him.  The employees who loved him the dog also reciprocated by moving his tail.  The dog was just like a security guard.  Throughout the night he regularly watched the whole complex alone.  Many times he caught the thieves by loud barking. It is a common saying that dogs have a sixth sense.  The dogs can sense the future happenings.  During the Chennai tsunami not a single animal died those who were not tied.  All the animals went to a safer place and saved themselves.

Whenever the dog felt sad he rested in front of the monument of Mr. Arun Gupta.  As the dogs have sixth sense he knew that in his previous birth he was Aurn Gupta.  This is his rebirth.  As dogs cannot talk so nobody knew that he was Mr. Arun Gupta.  After office hours he roamed the whole  complex  and watched the whole area.  As he had caught many thieves nobody used to say anything to him.  Sometimes at night he rested in front of the monument of Mr. Arun Gupta.  When he was sad he would sit for hours in front of the monument of Mr. Arun Gupta.  All the employees of the Institute used to tease and call him as Arun.  The dog used to guard the whole building complex as if it is his own house.  People used to say that the soul of Mr. Arun Gupta even after his death could not leave the attachment with that Institute.  So one should not be so much attached with anything, otherwise he would have the same fate as that of Mr. Arun Gupta.

Snowhite – A Fairy Tale with a Ghostly Twist

It was about 50 years back, I was traveling towards North England.  During the Winter season, North England faces heavy snowfall.  There is a village in North England named Bibury.  If we compare the villages of England, it is one of the most attractive villages in England.  Even at that time a lot of tourists flocked there to see the scenic beauty of that place.

One day there was a forecast that there would be very heavy snowfall, the innkeeper, Mr Humphrey warned me not to go out, but I was young and never used to pay heed to any advisory.  I wanted to explore every part of the village. Then I went alone.  There was a hillock and on top of it was an old house.  As I was making my way up, I encountered a big snow storm, I almost slipped and was about to fall and then I remember soft feminine hands with white gloves on, holded my hands. Next, what happened I did not remember. I woke up hours later up on the top, inside that old house, the fireplace was lit and warm. I called for anyone around, but there was no one. Not even a single soul.

I reached down, and Mr Humphrey was very happy to see me alive. He said, ‘Sir, you must be one with pure heart, else there was no chance you could have survived the storm’. I told him about what happened, he said oh so ‘Snow White’ saved you. And then he told me this story:

In that village, there lived a family of Johns.  In that family only three members inhabited.  Mr. John, Mrs. Nancy John and their daughter  Lucy.  Mrs.  Nancy was the second wife of John and stepmother of Lucy.  Lucy was only 12 years old.  Lucy lost her mother in infancy.  Lucy was the most beautiful girl of that village.  Everybody in the village nicknamed her as Snow White.  Her complexion was as white as snow.  Her step mother used to feel jealous of her beauty.  She always burdened her with odd tasks.  Due to her mother’s behaviour the whole village sympathized with her.  Her step mother was a tyrant.  She used to send her outside to buy things from the market at odd hours.

One day during the Winter season the weather was very bad.  The village Head had warned all the villagers not to go out that day as there was a likelihood of a snowstorm.  At the end of the village, there was a small forest and after crossing the forest there was a market.  That day Lucy’s mother told her to bring some household goods from that market.  It was at about 2.00 pm.  If one goes to the market and comes back it takes about 2 hours.  Her mother gave her a lantern, in case of bad weather, she could use that lantern.  In between, there was a small river, named the Coln river.  It is a tributary of the Thames river.  For crossing that river there was a wooden bridge.  The moment she entered the forest the snowstorm started.  The snowfall became heavier and heavier.  Due to heavy snowfall and storms, it was very difficult to walk.  Fearing her mother’s anger she could not dare come back.  If she had come back, she would have beaten her badly.  Due to heavy snowfall, she could only walk up to the river bank.

On the other hand, her father came back from work.  He inquired about his daughter.  She told him that she had sent her to the market.  Her father became very furious after hearing that.  Due to heavy snowfall and storms, her father could not move in search of her at night.  The next morning he took some villagers and went to the forest.  Initially, they could not find any trace of Lucy.  After some trudging in the forest, they saw her footsteps.  They all followed in the footsteps.  The steps went up to the river bank.  After that, there were no footsteps.  There was no trace of her body.  Some people told her father that she might have been buried under snow.  Some villagers told her father that Snow God might have taken her in the land of angels.  After a fanatic search, they could not find her body.

Even today whenever there is a snowstorm in the village, the villagers see her walking in between the storm.  While walking she never looks back only walks ahead.  If anyone gets an opportunity to visit that village they can see her only during the snowstorm.  Villagers still say she has not died and she has become an angel and she helps people of pure heart if they get stuck in a snowstorm.

Fate of Humanity

Author: Amy Hofstadter

I think I was sleeping, when a deep male voice woke me up. In front of me was standing a handsome old man, with all his hairs silver white. I saw around, the room looked different, it was not my usual studio apartment. The room was much larger and very dimly lit. The old man was standing about five feet away from me near a strange looking light source, surrounded by two coils glowing with light.

The old man was talking perhaps to me or to himself! I am not even sure that he knew I was present there.
His voice echoed in my ears, “Today I am 120 year old, almost the last surviving male of my generation!  Inventor of  life force generator, a device that can generate infinite energy from nothing.”  Saying this, he moved towards the central light source.  I don’t know if it is my imagination, or just pure sleep, but I am sure I saw at that moment the  light source flickered and few firefly like things flew from it, they merged  into that old man’s face. The face of old man, was glowing, as if just reduced few years of age. His eyes were full of adulation like a father doting on his only child.
Then, suddenly his face tensed, three distinct tension lines were visible on his forehead. He  spoke, “It is almost time, Edward Clifton, is about to reach.”, saying this he checked his pockets. He was wearing a long grey overcoat.
My mind questioned who is Edward Clifton, and almost instantly I  got answers in terms of visuals. I saw a brilliant, blue eyed young man in early 20s surrounded by thousands of men  and women, shouting slogans, “Bring the change, give us infinite youth ,  give us the right to immortality”.

In the instance I understood, that these men and women wanted all human beings on earth  to be connected to this life force generator. The science has build the technology to directly feed energy in the human body by attaching a small wireless receiver in the base of spine. Human of this era have the ability to indefinitely without food, and in the absence of food metabolic activities, no ageing. Wow! an immortal human society, I was so thrilled and still trying to process it is a dream or reality.

A part of my brain argued that Amita perhaps yesterday you  were reading an article about free radicals and aging by D Harman, maybe your subconscious is building story around it! Another part was saying, hey this is so real, I can almost touch the device, feel the energy coming from it!!

My thoughts and visuals were interrupted by the arrival of a small pod in the room. A sliding door opened and from that pod emerged the young, (beautiful) Edward Clifton.  He was wearing a large zebra stripes pullover, blue denim jeans and woolen black muffler. He looked so dashing, I was mesmerized by finding him near me. I swear he could hear my long desiring breaths.

The old man rushed to greet Edward and hugged him, as if hugging a very dear friend. Still in awe, I was taken aback as I saw old man’s left hand reaching his overcoat pocket and drawing out a revolver. I was horrified, but even before I could have shouted, I saw the old man, putting revolver on his own head and pulling the trigger. It all happened in a minuscule time fraction.
The old man’s dead body was in Edwards hand, the blood oozing from the head had soiled the floor.
A small note slowly dropped from old man’s shirt and flew towards me. with shaking hands I picked it up and read,
“I am sending this signal in time space continuum, in the hope that one who can make and carry on with  the right decision will see it and act upon it”.
As I read, the paper crumpled and turned into ashes.
It has been an year and half now since I saw it all happening, unsure even now if it is a dream or really a message across space time continuum.  The detection of gravitational waves in the mid, February 2016, many say will pave way for the time machine. May be it is a dream, may be it is a message. But what can I do, a very insignificant human being, living in a third world country!
I decided finally to write it up and share, maybe you are the one who can understand the message and know what should be done.

Illusions

Author: Amy Hofstadter

Today I was sitting on the system studying when a wave of sleep surrounded me. Forced by it I went to bed.
And I saw I am a teenager again, and just as in this lifetime I am very naughty going to all places I am not supposed to go. And added as icing on the cake, I have a twin brother (just-like-me in nature) and he is also my best friend. In this lifetime he is a very good friend and my mentor.
I live on some planet like Earth (or maybe Earth itself), It has much more water than what it has now and our small country gets people from other countries coming and going through small ships. So in the dream I somehow in a lazy afternoon, go on top of a secluded building, I love going there as I love to see the horizon. Today I am alone, on that top building, there is an isolated system (it is a discarded Apache server, left there by someone, and is still in working condition, I and my brother have been trying to hack into it.

Today I am alone, and somehow there is tectonic movement taking place so feel the shock, in the shock for a moment I see a different view, I am on a ship sailing through the ocean and the ship has been struck by a giant wave. Once things settle down I decide to explore and discover that there is a semi-circular holographic field covering the whole ship.
I come down waiting for my brother to tell him the adventure. As usual, we first have a sibling fight, he telling me why I went alone, but soon the adventure overtakes us both, as we realize we are living in a holo-suite. All on our ship are living in the impression they live on land.

How many such ships would be there?
Those who come to us on occasions, do they too live on a Holo-Ship/land?
The size of our ship cannot have so many people, so those strangers we have seen on roads, whom no one we know talks to, who do not wave to us, or pass us the ball when it is near them, are they too holographic, created just to give us illusion that there are many of us!!!

The birth miracle

Author: Dunija Rothschild

Ranju and Rajeev had recently got married after a courtship of six months. They were very happy, God had been very kind to them. Ranju, a middle class girl from Mathura, tall, beautiful, and very fond of dressing. She had come to Delhi in search for better career avenues.  Rajeev an IIT graduate, young entrepreneur, all for make in India movement. The two were very different and yet the day Ranju went to Rajeev’s firm for the interview, the two clicked instantly.

Six months were like heaven for two and despite their cultural background difference, families had no resistance and they were married in an Arya Samaj Mandir. After marriage both went to Vrindavan to pay Homage to Lord Krishna, after all Ranju had great faith in him.
Life after marriage was usual, they had rough times and good times. They had fights and love. It was a roller coaster ride, but they enjoyed every bit of it because they loved each other.  And then one day Ranju came to know that she is pregnant, it was like a dream come true. Everyone was more than happy, except her elder sister-in law Sunita. Sunita had been now married for six years and despite many attempts had not been successful in conceiving, they had tried everything, even IVF, but no success.

Ranju, could realize the discomfort and pain of Sunita but was unable to do much. Her pregnancy continued. She would go for regular checkups with Rajeev to her local gynecologist Dr Subhra.  Dr Shubhra, retired from Lady Harding, was a very renowned gynecologist in Delhi.  Every thing went well, it was her last trimester, when one day she could no longer feel the child moving. Immediately, both Ranju and Rajeev rushed to Dr Shubra’s clinic, it was very late in night, despite being tired Dr Shubra took them in and performed the ultrasound test. There was no heart beat. The child was dead. There was no other option but to go for abortion. With heavy heart and mind Ranju and Rajeev took the appointment for abortion the next day and left the clinic. Whole night Ranju was in tears, she kept asking Lord Krishna, why, why, why. And perhaps for the first time, she really understood the pain Sunita is going through. By morning, the tears had dried up, and Lord Krishna had not uttered a single word.

At the appointed time they reached the clinic, everything was ready, she was taken to the OT, and was being prepared for abortion.  In OT she found Dr Shubra along with another doctor, Dr Shubra introduced him as Dr Raghunath, a retired gynecologist from AIIMS. Dr Raghunath enquired Ranju, how is she, though she was sad, and her Lord Krishna see,ed to have abandoned her, she replied with heaviness in her heart, perhaps this is the God’s wish. Dr Raghinath, sympathetically kept his hand on her forehead, and boom she felt a strong kick in her stomach, she cried.

Dr Shubra repeated the ultrasound and was astonished to see the child healthy. They searched for Dr Raghunath, he was not in clinic. Dr Shubra then tried calling him at his home, she was astonished to know that Dr Raghunath is not in Delhi anymore, he has moved to US with his son.

Ranju gave birth to a healthy boy child two months later, she named him Venkat Prasad, gift from  Lord Krishna himself.  Today she is a proud mother of two sons, she have taught both of them to call and treat both her and Sunita as mothers.  Life is still full of ups and down for them, but they have now something that makes the journey easier. They have faith….
